Raranga – Weaving and plaiting takes new forms
I am deeply searching for plants, their properties, their colour, fragrance, fibre and its history. I am interested in plants as intelligent and social organisms with complex forms of communication and information processing.
During the lockdowns and pandemic, I was in New Zealand, and I took the opportunity to study Raranga and Rongoa, including pre-and post colonialism with the Māori, the Indigenous people of Aotearoa, at the Māori’s own School. I learned new narratives about Birds, Trees, Water, Plants and Health, respect, pre-and post colonisation and Papatūānuku – the land and Kaitiakitanga – How Māori are leading the way in our environment.
In my research work, I am also digging down in plants that have been used in the Northern Hemisphere for weaving and plating that has been forgotten.
